What is the Digital Media Academy?
The Digital Media Academy is an afterschool program that serves elementary and middle school-aged students in the Gadsden Independent School District.  Students learn about various content areas such as STEM, reading, social studies, art, and physical education through creative uses of educational technology.  We use computers and hand held devices, camera and filming equipment, interactive technology, and various types of software as tools for learning.

Who can participate in the Digital Media Academy – DiMA?
Students that are in fourth through sixth grade, and all middle school students can participate in DiMA?

What time does DiMA start and how long does the program last?
DiMA begins after the regularly scheduled classes end.  Students will stay afterschool for about an hour and a half to two hours once a week.  The program lasts for 11 weeks, culminating in a family festival.  Family members are invited to see what the students learned and made during the program, enjoy refreshments, and participate in exciting activities students have mastered.

What are some of the activities DiMA provides?
DiMA students learn how to use technology in a variety of ways to enhance their learning experiences.  Students do the following while participating in DiMA:
• Students learn how to properly use camera equipment to make educational videos, conduct interviews, and record special events in the communities students live.
• Learn to use the internet safely and responsibly by engaging students in activities for safe social networking that address cyberbullying, accessibility of personal information, and identifying reliable sources of information.
• Discover the importance of STEM education through hands on activities such as stomp rockets and engineering challenges.
• Visit the New Mexico State University campus to gain some perspective on what college is like and what types of careers they can have by continuing their educations.

Does it cost anything to join?
No, DiMA is free to all students who want to join as long as they have their parent permission and sign up early!

How do students get home after the program ends?
Buses are provided to those students who want to participate in the afterschool program.
